09/07/2009: Riserva dello Zingaro - Not to be missed in Sicily!

A Natural Park Found only 1 Hour from Palermo, boasts Stunning Sea, and Lush Natural Botanicals...

Riserva dello Zingaro is the first natural park of Sicily, containing over 650 rare botanical plants and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.  The park has several paths through the riserve, varying in lengths, from half hour to 9 hours in length. There are two seperate entrances one in Scopello, and the other on the opposite end San Vito Capo.  I recommend using the Scopello entrance, from there you can reach the closest beach by walking for only a half hour. Otherwise you can take the more scenic route which is approximately 1 hour to lead to a second more secluded beach. Along the path you can see the various botanicals, and even eat the wild blackberries.  In additional there is a historic house where you can stop to rest.  You will need a good sturdy pair of sneakers for this trip since the path is predominately composed of rocks, and you will need to pack a backpack with water, panini's and other materials as it is rather desolate.

This is a map of the Riserve showing the different pathways and seperate entrances.

The crystal clear waters of the riserve, perfect for snorkling!
