About Spain

Spain has always had a loyal following, especially with the generation that grew up reading the novels of Ernest Hemingway. Today, the New Spain is more than Hemingway. Yes, bullfight aficionados still sit at cafes drinking sherry and talking about "death in the afternoon." But the New Spain is also a country of great energy, modern cities and new foods that convey a unique charm.

US Airways, American, Continental, and Delta all serve Spain from the United States, as well as Iberia, Spain's official airline. For domestic travel within Spain, all major cities are serviced by Iberia. Hertz, Avis, and Europa car rental companies serve all major cities.

Travel by train is easy and efficient. The Ave, the ultra high-speed train that travels between Madrid and Seville, reaches speeds over 185 miles per hour. It makes the several hundred-mile trip in 2 hours and 15 minutes, hardly time enough time for a light Spanish snack and a glass of wine. Trains run across Spain between major cities as part of the national network known as RENFE. The train station in Madrid is a thoroughly modern facility containing a large garden museum.

There are 170 challenging golf courses in the country, many with luxury hotels and condominiums for accommodations. Severiano Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin designed many. The 1997 Ryder Cup was played at the Club de Golf Valderrama near Sotogrande.

Barcelona is one of the hottest cities in Europe, and we don't mean temperature. The city is a lovely blend of New York and San Francisco. Calle Serrano, the major shopping street in Madrid is lined with elegant shops that rival New York's Fifth Avenue or Chicago's Michigan Avenue.

Food in Spain is exciting with a great deal of variety. Many international food critics contend that Spanish food can proudly compete with France and Italy. An outstanding feature of Spanish cuisine is fresh seafood.

Madrid, an inland city boasts some of the best seafood restaurants in Europe. The Basque region in northern Spain is growing in popularity. This is no surprise to the Basques who have always argued that they are the best cooks in Spain, even perhaps in Europe. Basque food is colorful, light and simple, yet elegant.

Spain also has an impressive number of world-class museums: The Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Prado and the Reina Sophia in Madrid, and the El Greco home in Toledo.

The villas and homes offered by EL Sol are charming, with comfortable facilities. There are English-speaking doctors located across Spain. Every El Sol client receives the name and location of the nearest English speaking medical doctor.
