Basque Country

The Basque country is situated in the easternmost part of the Cantabrian coast bordering on France. It is a green countryside dotted with homes that remind one more of the Swiss Alps than the rugged image of Spain. Bilbao and San Sebastian are the two most prominent cities of the region. Bilbao, the industrial and financial capital of the country, is also home to the world famous Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry. The museum, set on the river in the middle of Bilbao, is built of titanium and glass. Then there is the lovely San Sebastian, a modern and elegant seaside city that is one of the most beautiful settings in the world. The Basques possess a culture that is rich in folklore, and they are known for their extraordinary food. Basque cooking is considered to be the best in Spain and (the Basques like to think) the best in Europe.
