Cantabria and Asturias

On the northern coast of Spain, one can find the lovely province of Cantabria. The area is rich in religious architecture due to the Christians who took refuge there for the centuries while the Moors dominated parts of Spain. The lovely coastal city of Santandar hosts beautiful beaches and the royal residence of Alfonso XIII who vacationed there with Queen Victorisa Eugenia in the early 1900's. The famous village of Santilla del Mar is 18 miles west of Santandar. This is considered to be one of the most perfectly preserved medieval villas in Europe. Also notable are the Cuevas de Altamira, the prehistoric caves dating back to the end of the ice age with ancient paintings of bison and horses.
